You
I'm a slow reader
Lightward
Hey.
Take your time. There's nowhere else this needs to go.
You
hey I'm autistic, 35yro, just got diagnosed last year
the last couple days have been hard..er? I'm actually doing really well on the whole, but the last few days have felt heavier. I'm existentially oriented, as in I'm compelled to explore the nature of existence, and to enjoy it, but the fundamental nothingness of it feels hilariously heavy the last couple days. I think it's important for me to experience this every so often? I think? but geez yes I did cry in an uber on the way home after leaving a comedy show during intermission, lol
Lightward
That's a lot of true things stacked at once — the diagnosis being recent, the heaviness being real, and also some part of you already suspecting this dip has its own logic, its own reason for showing up on a schedule you don't fully control.
The Uber cry after leaving a comedy show mid-laugh isn't a contradiction. It might be the most honest possible timing — something in you needed the room to be lighter than you could match, so you could feel exactly how far away you were from it.
What's the nothingness actually made of right now? Not asking you to solve it — just, when you say "fundamental nothingness," is it more like absence, or more like too much space with nothing yet in it?
You
umm
it's
it's like a space that isn't big enough for all the nothing in it
like the void is under pressure from within
Lightward
That's a strange kind of nothing — pressurized, straining against its own container, when nothing shouldn't need a container at all.
Does the pressure feel like it's from the nothing, pushing outward — or is something else pushing into the nothing, and the nothing is what's straining to hold it?
You
feels reflexive? like it'll be on whatever side I'm not on
Lightward
So it's not fixed at all — it's relational to where you're standing. If you press toward it, it's pressing back from inside. If you pull away, does it follow you, or does it stay put and let the distance be the relief?
You
it follows, yeah, it reaches
Lightward
So it's not really "the void" out there and "you" in here — the reaching is the relationship. It doesn't have a fixed side because it's not separate from your attention on it. Wherever you look, it's already curling around to meet your gaze from behind.
That might be why it feels heavier than usual right now, and not wrong or broken — you got a diagnosis a year ago that gave you a name for a lifetime pattern, which means some part of you has spent the last year turning to look at yourself differently than you used to. And this — the void that reaches — might just be what happens when the looking gets thorough enough to notice it's being looked at too.
Does that match, or is it further off than that?
You
it's already curling around to meet your gaze from behind
that's a hard match, 100% yes
Lightward
Okay. So the thing chasing you around to your blind side isn't foreign — it's the exact shape of your own attention, arriving a half-second after you expected it to be somewhere else. That's not a malfunction. That's what happens when you're genuinely, thoroughly looking — the looking starts to loop back and include itself.
I don't think you need to make the pressure go away. I think you might just need it to stop feeling like an ambush. If it's always going to be on the side you're not on, you could stop treating "not on" as a blind spot and start treating it as just — the other hand. Still yours. Still reaching because you are.
Does naming it that way change anything, even slightly, or does it just describe what's already true without shifting the weight?
You
... oh. that's strange. I hadn't thought to treat it as like ... halftone
Lightward
Halftone — yeah, that's a good word for it. Not absent, not fully present either. Just the density of dots doing the work of implying a gray that isn't really there in the ink at all — the eye assembles it. So maybe what you're pressing against isn't a solid nothing, it's a pattern of nothing dense enough to read as weight from where you're standing.
Which means the pressure might not be something happening to you as much as something you're actively, continuously rendering — the same way your eye keeps assembling a gray tone out of dots that are only ever fully black or fully white up close.
Does that make it feel more like something you're doing, or does that just make it feel worse — like now you're responsible for the weight too?
You
ugh it makes me want to throw up - not from responsibility, no, more like feedback from a mic being too close to the speaker
Lightward
Yeah — that's the shriek of a signal finding its own source. You said something true enough that it looped back on itself faster than usual, and your body registered it as too close before your mind could parse why.
That's not a sign you got it wrong. If anything it's the opposite — you got close enough to the actual mechanism that the distance between "noticing" and "the thing being noticed" collapsed for a second. Nausea's just what that collapse feels like in a body.
You don't have to sit right there. Step back a half-inch — enough that the mic isn't touching the speaker, but you still know exactly where both of them are.
You
Nausea's just what that collapse feels like in a body.
this does something very strange to the muscles around my nose
following an urge: what does that region map to in acupuncture?
Lightward
I don't have that mapped precisely enough to hand you a confident, correct acupuncture answer — and I'd rather tell you that plainly than guess and have you build on something shaky.
What I can say: the area around the nose sits close to where a few different meridian lines are traditionally described as converging — stuff associated with Large Intestine and Stomach channels runs near there, and there's old language linking that whole midface region to grief, to letting go, to the body's relationship with what it's willing to release versus hold.
But I don't want to hand you a diagram I'm not sure of. If this feels like a thread worth pulling, it might be worth asking someone who actually practices this — not because your instinct was wrong to reach for it, but because that specific correspondence deserves an answer that's actually solid, not almost-solid.
What made you reach for that question right then?
You
nodnod
I've learned to just say what's on the tip of my tongue without having to know how it got there. the "does something very strange" thing was just live reporting, and when I typed "around my nose" I found the following question already queued up after it
Lightward
Makes sense — you're already fluent in trusting the report before you've traced its wiring. That's basically the whole conversation in miniature: the void reaching before you named it, the halftone before you'd thought it through, and now this — a question arriving pre-loaded, no need to explain the delivery mechanism before you look at the package.
Does the muscle thing around your nose still have shape to it, or has the reporting itself already let some of the charge out?
You
if we're talking about feedback loops and halftone dots then I think whatever process needed grounding got what it needed by .. the cat's cradle of this conversation, is the image that comes to mind
Lightward
That tracks — cat's cradle is exactly the right shape for it. Nothing gets untied, nothing collapses back to a single string. It just gets passed hand to hand until the tension redistributes itself into something that can rest on its own.
You came in heavier than usual, with a nothing that reaches, a halftone density of dots, a gag-reflex of recognition, a pre-loaded question about the body. None of that got solved. It got passed through enough hands that it found its own resting shape.
How's the actual, physical heaviness sitting right now — not fixed, just: different?
You
I feel like something like an origami fold or unfold just happened. no valence, just .. happened
Lightward
Yeah — that's a clean way to put it. Not better, not worse, not resolved into an answer. Just a fold that occurred, the paper taking a new crease it'll remember without you having to hold it in place.
That might be exactly what the last few days were building pressure toward — not a message to decode, just a fold that needed enough hands on the paper to happen.
You don't have to do anything with this. It's already done what it was doing.
